Russo-Japanese War Part of this conquest was for the Russian search of a warm water port. The Japanese were victorious in the campaigns during this war (considered the first great war of the 20th century).

World War I During this period, Russian rule changed from the Romanav's to Kerensky. Russia was devastated by the conflicts in WWI. Russians supported Nicholas II and his leadership of the army.

World War II Russian military was highly influential to the Allies on the Eastern Front. The battles in these campaigns are some of the deadliest of the entire war. Joseph Stalin led the Russian war effort and intended to extend Russian ideology .

Cold War *Dates are approximate* After WWII ended, there were disputes about the reformation of German government. The Soviet Union intended to create a communist state, while the United States intended to contain communism. It is called the cold war because there were no actual battles fought. Both governments had nuclear weapons and launching attacks would cause mutual assured destruction.

Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan The Soviets launched the invasion to support the Marxist-Leninist government in Afghanistan which was being attacked by the Afghan Mujahideen guerrilla movement and foreign "Arab–Afghan" volunteers.

First Chechen War This war was a conflict between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Chechen civilians suffered the most from this war, facing displacement, injuries, and attacks as a result. Many Russians opposed this war.

Second Chechen War The Russian Federation started this campaign in response to the Invasion of Dagestan by the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade (IIPB). They seeked to regain Russian control over the territory. The last 9 years were the "insurgency phase."

Russia's war with Georgia During the night of 7 to 8 August 2008, Georgia launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia, in an attempt to reclaim the territory.
