Leopard chesapeake_tiny 06/12/1807 Impressment The Leopard and Chesapeake was an excellent example of impressment. Impressment was the forced recruitment of American sailors to the British Navy. The British warship (The Leopard) attacked the American warship (The Chesapeake). The reason they said they attacked was beacuse there were British navy deserters on the ship. Four innocent Americans were charged and one person was even executed on The Leopard. Impressment was a major problem until around 1815.
Intercourse or impartial dealings_tiny 12/22/1807 The Embargo Act of 1807 The Embargo Act of 1807 stopped trade between America and other countries. The goal was to get Britain and France, who were fighting each other at the time, to stop restricting American trade. The act backfired because the Americans thought the British depended on them for Agricultural products, but it became a disaster when Britain started trading with Latin America. The act was repealed on March 1, 1809.
Battle_of_lake_erie_tiny 09/10/1813 Battle of Lake Erie The Battle of Lake Erie was when nine vessels of the US Navy defeated and captured 6 vessels of Great Britain's Royal Navy. This was one of the biggest battles of the War of 1812. This battle ensured America control of the lake for the rest of the war. This also allowed the Americansto recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the Indian Confederation of Tecumseh.

The British forces, led by General Robert Ross, occupied Washington DC and set fire to many public buildings following the American defeat at the battle of Bladesburg. The British also burned the White House.
09/13/1814 The Battle of Baltimore Most dangerous period following the war for Independence as Patriots fighting a vengeful foreign power on American shores. The War of 1812 has been called the "second war of independence" it forged national character and demonstrated that Americans would unite not only to win liberty but to keep it.
