Missouri-compromise_tiny 02/14/1820 Missouri Compromise Admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. In 1854 it was repealed by the Kansas/Nebraska act.
Wilmot2_tiny 08/18/1846 Wilmot Proviso Tried to stop spread of slavery into the territories. Never passed in house o r congress.
Image001_tiny 01/29/1850 Compromise of 1850 Califorina was enterd as a free state. New Mexico and Utah were each allowed to use popular sovereignty to decide the issue of slavery. In other words, the people would pick whether the states would be free or slave.

943_tiny 10/16/1859 John Browns Raid Led a group of 21 men from Maryland to Virginia. Their immediate objective was the capture of the cache of weapons stored at the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Brown's ultimate goal was to destroy the slave system of the South.
